What is an emergency?

During our opening hours, you can contact us directly for emergencies as we handle emergency cases ourselves. Outside these hours, please contact AniCura Rijswijk on 085 483 1300 for 24/7 assistance.

Not every situation is straightforward, but if in doubt, we always advise you to contact us by telephone immediately. For situations outside our regular hours, we work closely with a specialist emergency clinic, ensuring your pet receives the best possible care 24 hours a day.

Types of emergencies

Ingestion of toxic or foreign substances
Contact us immediately if your pet has ingested chocolate, rat poison, antifreeze, toxic plants (such as lilies) or non-prescription medication such as paracetamol. This also applies if your pet has swallowed an object, such as a toy.

Shortness of breath and breathing difficulties
Is your pet showing signs of acute shortness of breath, or are its tongue and mucous membranes blue or purple in colour? Please call us immediately for assistance.

Problems with urination
Contact us immediately if your pet is unable to urinate. This often indicates a life-threatening blockage of the urinary tract requiring immediate medical intervention.

Severe trauma
Following a collision or a fall, a check-up is always necessary. Even without visible injury, there may be dangerous internal damage, such as a ruptured spleen or bladder.

Severe blood loss
In the event of serious wounds or severe blood loss, immediate medical care is necessary to stabilise the situation.

Neurological problems and loss of consciousness
Seek immediate help in the event of neurological symptoms, acute collapse or if your pet loses consciousness.

Overheating and hypothermia
Extreme body temperatures are life-threatening and require immediate action. In cases of overheating, immediate cooling and medical assistance are crucial. In cases of hypothermia too, for example following a fall into cold water or prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, you must contact us immediately for intensive care and treatment.

Birthing problems
Is your animal’s labour not going according to plan or are complications arising? Please contact our vets immediately.
